After a hellish 24 hours in titanium cage full of screaming children we landed in Melbourne at 7am. The first day was kinda a non-starter; we went to Peter Pans travel agents across the street from our hostel and booked a few trips for the next 5 weeks we were planning on spending in Australia. We also booked a couple of things we'd been recommended to do in Melbourne - The Great Ocean Road (TGOR) and Phillip Island.
The first trip we did was TGOR, unfortunately we only had time for a day trip despite wanting to stay the night. We did a Wildlife Tours trip for both this and Phillip Island, I would definitely recommend them. We visited a couple of beaches, a tree walk where we saw wild koalas and ended up at the 12 apostles all of which were beautiful.
Phillip Island was a similar lay out to TGOR trip stopping at several places including Maru an animal sanctuary where we met our first Kangaroos and Wallabies. The tour guide on this day trip wasn't as informative or knowledgable as at TGOR (he also told me the chicken sandwich was cheese, ruining my 6 year vegetarian run!). We headed to Woolamai beach, the Nobbies before ending the day at Phillip Island watching the penguin parade, the penguins were so cute!!!
During our time in Melbourne we visited a couple of art galleries, down the Yarra river where there was a Latin festival, wandered through Hosier Lane, visited Queen Victoria Market and up the Eureka Sky Deck. On the final day we also went to St. Kilda which was beautiful and is meant to have a lot of good bars and restaurants and I wish we could of stayed there for longer than a day.
I loved Melbourne and if you visit Australia I would definitely recommend spending a bit of time there and can totally understand why it's named one of the most liveable cities!
