Duration: 6 days
Accommodation: Dreamtime
Next Stop: Townsville (Magnetic Island) - Greyhound Bus
After a lovely few days in Melbourne we flew up to Cairns our first stop before starting our trip down the East Coast to Sydney.
We stayed at Dreamtime hostel which had a cosy, more family like atmosphere. Cairns was probably one of my least favourite places, the town itself didn't excite me. It did however work well as a base for the day trips we had booked; The Great Barrier Reef and Uncle Brian's but I would, if returning, only spend a maximum of 3 days in Cairns. We went to the day and night markets, the mall and down to the sea which sadly didn't have a beach just a lagoon to swim in. The sunset was beautiful however due to the surrounding mountains.
The Uncle Brian's tour was essentially a tour of various waterfalls around Cairns. If you do hire a car it would be easy enough to do alone and all of the waterfalls (as far as I know) are free to enter saving yourself a lot of money. I am glad I did the Uncle Brian's tour as we met a lot of lovely people and th whole day was loads of fun! We also went to the iconic (maybe iconic?), hair flick in the Peter Andre and TRESemmé advert, waterfall which was by far the most murky, brown waterfall of all the waterfalls and lakes.
We went out on the Great Barrier Reef on a boat called Ocean Freedom which was great, the crew, the food, the boat itself. It was exactly what we wanted and we met some lovely people onboard. I did however burn my face badly even after several applications of factor 50 *blames windburn*.
After spending a few too many days in cairns we headed to Townsville...
